Container Recycling Infrastructure That Pays for Itself
Reduce bin damage, divert containers from landfill, and give your community a visible recycling win, with zero ongoing service costs.
The Problem
Every year, millions of refundable containers end up in your council bins.
That means:
- Ratepayer money wasted on collecting and landfilling containers worth 10 cents each
- Bin damage and mess from collectors searching through waste
- Lost refund revenue that could benefit your community
- Missed recycling targets
Currently less than 20% of Australian street bins give the public an option to recycle containers separately. Bin Bypass changes that.
The Solution
Container Docking Stations for Public Spaces
Bin Bypass units retrofit onto your existing street infrastructure (bins, poles, bus stops, fences), giving the public a simple way to separate refundable containers instead of sending them to landfill.
How it works:
- Passers-by place empty cans and bottles into the docking station instead of the bin
- Community collectors safely retrieve containers with dignity
- Collectors return containers to a refund point and receive the 10c refund
- Your bins stay cleaner, last longer, and cost less to service
No moving parts. No collection contracts. No ongoing service costs.
Why Councils Choose Bin Bypass
Zero ongoing costs. There's no servicing and no collection contracts. Stainless steel and powder-coated materials resist degradation, and community collectors self-manage container removal, incentivised by the 10c refund.
It reduces bin damage. Collectors no longer need to search through bins, which means less mess, fewer broken lids, and less anti-social behaviour around waste infrastructure.
Installation is straightforward. Units mount to poles (75mm or wider) via stainless steel banding, or bolt to flat surfaces like bins and fences. No specialist tools or civil works required.
The units are vandal and graffiti resistant. No vandalism incidents have been reported across any deployment. The glossy finish and limited surface area discourage graffiti.
Safe by design. Units are installed at a minimum of 900mm above ground, keeping them accessible for depositing but out of reach for small children. No sharp edges, no moving parts.
Australian made. Designed and manufactured in Brisbane, with typical lead times under one month and stock units available for immediate deployment.
Proven Results
From trial to permanent infrastructure
Sunshine Coast Council installed 40 Container Exchange Points at Cotton Tree Park in partnership with Container Exchange (COEX). Over 10,000 containers were diverted from landfill in just two months. The trial was successful enough that the council made the units permanent.
Redlands Coast Council launched in Cleveland, then expanded to Mount Cotton, Victoria Point, Capalaba and Wellington Point, more than doubling the number of exchange points on the mainland.
At statewide scale, over 600 Container Exchange Points are now operating across 13 local government areas in Queensland, including Moreton Bay (70 units), Logan, Townsville, Mackay, and Scenic Rim. Each unit can divert up to 300 containers per day from landfill.
Danish pilots reported a 49% reduction in lost container deposits, results that preceded nationwide adoption across multiple European countries.
Pricing
Simple pricing. No hidden costs.
| Unit Type | Starting From | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Recycled Plastic Unit | $35 per unit | High-volume rollouts, budget-conscious deployments |
| Aluminium Unit | $130 per unit | Durability in high-traffic or coastal environments |
| Basket Configuration | $550 | Multi-unit installations, high-turnover locations |
No ongoing service fees. No collection contracts required. Volume pricing is available for council-wide rollouts. All units are Australian designed and manufactured.
Common Council Questions
What infrastructure do we need? None beyond what you already have. Units attach to existing poles (75mm or wider), bins, fences, or flat surfaces using stainless steel banding or standard fixings.
Do we need to arrange collection? No. Community collectors are self-incentivised by the 10c container refund. In trials, containers were collected within one to two days.
What if no collectors operate in our area? Units are designed for areas with regular foot traffic. Trials showed that visibility and ease of access attracted collectors who hadn't previously collected from bins.
Does it attract litter or misuse? No. The restrictive circular openings, partially open bottom, and closed top design actively discourage general littering.
Will it increase anti-social behaviour? Bin Bypass eliminates unsafe bin-diving by giving collectors a dignified, purpose-built access point.
Can units be removed if needed? Yes. Banding installation allows removal without damaging the pole, bin, or unit itself.
How quickly can we deploy? Stock units are available for immediate deployment. Custom or large orders typically ship within one month.
